By religious standards Sunday’s are usually a day of rest. A time to kick back, relax on the couch or the backyard porch with a glass of lemonade or headphones. However this doesn’t apply to all people especially if you’re in a band playing a gig as the atmosphere at the GG was anything but leisurely. Punks, goths and metal heads milled around the premises chattering excitedly about the show. The evening’s lineup offered three bands with the big similarities of being heavy, pit inducing and loud.
First up Kentucky native’s Poor Man’s Riches turned on the electricity proving they were headliners in the making. With accents a plenty they played a rich rock sound with splashes of sizzling blues and a touch of thrash that any city boy could admire. They showcased the elements of success playing radio friendly songs while still keeping an edge. A little good-natured humor goes a long way sometimes as they didn’t forget their country roots. The singer carried a Chris Jericho look and charisma. www.poormansriches.com.
Staple emerged next with more screaming and in your face antics conducting the crowd’s activity as the pit filled with passion. Promoting new songs Dictatorship VS Democracy (DVD) and Memory is Treachery (there’s no peace through revenge) they put their signature clamp on all performances. www.staplemusic.com.
The metal waves began as Disciple hit the stage. They’ve shared the Avenue stage with Pillar and have now stepped wide onto the much played GG platform. It was time for a hardcore metal religious revival that no church organ or choir could handle. With a set encompassing their five disk career they broke out some destined classics, some tunes from their latest Back Again CD and a newbie Rise Up from When All Else Fails. They make music to mosh, swing, bump and bob too. It was glory to the highest… in a pure unison love of metal. Along with some inspired preaching, fans of all ages did their thing whether it was in-pit celebration, throwing them-selves at the stage or standing in awe as 2 year old Isabel (probably their youngest fan) watched the giants play to heaven’s delight. www.disciplerocks.com.
